Our Raised Beds: We are almost there with our raised beds, and it is good to see the project almost in the completion stage. Two beds have been constructed, and we have broadened the paths around them for easier access. We have been successful in getting some funding from the Small Sparks Grant, administered by Whitley Bay’s Big Local,which will supply the beds with topsoil, and some special ergonomic tools. We also have two people keen on taking over the beds when these final things are done. By next spring we expect to have a new hosepipe at the front of the site, which will give the new gardeners closer access to water.

Would you like to be able have use of on-site gardening supplies, that we all can contribute to and share? This would mean we could buy stuff in bulk, which would be more cost effective, and safer to store. It would also mean that we could have things on tap for when we needed them.
Kath, our Treasurer, has come up with this idea and has volunteered to be quartermaster, and to administer the scheme. Give us some feedback if you think it is a good idea and would like to take part. At the start of next season, Kath is happy to take a list of suggestions on what plot holders would like ordered. We could even potentially order some manure at the start of next season if people are interested. As well as the smaller stuff like tomato feed and fertilisers or even seeds.
Our community allotment seems to have got new heart and energy this autumn,which is being reflected in the appearance of the site. I am pleased to say the site is beginning to look well cared for and valued once again. Our established plot holders seem to have been re-invigorated, and with the beginning of the tenancy year we have also had a new influx of enthusiastic newbies to the site. Please give our new gardeners a warm welcome when you see them. It has been good to see everybody digging their plots and tidying pathways and getting on with their winter planting. We hope the new garden furniture on the site, and the other touches the committee has tried to improve upon has made it a more comfortable and orderly place to be. As the main growing season is coming to a close, now is the time to slow down and reflect on our year, and look forward to planning for next season.

If our plans come to fruition (good word), in 2017, we are hoping that we will be able to plan our own community orchard before too long, so the skills you will gain on the courses could be very significant if you are interested in fruit growing.

We are almost ready to put our allotment to bed, with the work sessions taking place this weekend Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November, and the proceeding week to Friday 11th November. We hope you will all do your best to come to any of the convenient times we have suggested., and do your bit to see our site is left in good order for the winter months ahead. I will have Work Sheets laid out on the table with a list of what needs to be done if there are no committee members around to guide you, but if you see a job not listed that needs doing please go ahead with it also. There will be separate information sheets for specific jobs, but it is all very straighforward.

Next weekend is our yearly Spring Work Session. It will take place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April between 11am and 3pm. These are pop in sessions, so even if you can only come for an hour or two on either day, that would be helpful. It is the start of the season for us and we need to get the site put into a decent order to start our planting year. It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain the site, so do try to come even if for a short time.

We have decided to change the system that operated in the polytunnel in 2015 because we felt it didn’t work very well. After the saturation of plants in 2014 in the polytunnel, we settled on what we thought was a fairer system where each plot was allocated their own space. However, last year we found that the polytunnel was very under used.

Plot Holders, You are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of Whitley Bay Community Allotment & Gardens. This will take place at 11am on Sunday 13th March 2016 at the Community Shed. It is very important that as many people as possilbe attend, as it is vital we have enough members to support the committee and to ensure the successful survival of the community allotment. As well as electing our committee, it gives us an opportunity to reflect on our previous year and make decisions and plans for the future. If you are not able to attend please let me know.
